Question:

What do I need to install a chain link fence?

I want to install 48 feet of chain link fencing. Well, kinda. I want to fence in an area near my house and deck. 36 feet by 12 feet. I only need the two sides, as the house will act as one barrier and the lattice board from the deck will be the other. I want to put the gate on the short side. Does that make any sense?

  1. Sure it makes sense. Check out the website below. Remember to check to see if you need a building permit from your local government. Also, the people at LOWES and Home Depot can give you some advice.

  2. Rent a rotor hole digger. Bore holes on 8' centers about 1 foot diameter, 2 feet deep. Place posts centered in holes, plumb and brace to keep plumb. Pour in concrete mix (can be dry)... recheck for plumb, add water to mix...as much as can be absorbed by mix...the rest will happen over time...do nothing for 7-10 days. Make sure these posts will stick up about 1" higher than chain link fence, assuming level terrain. Rent a chain link stretcher, roll out fencing, wire to first post, use stretcher and stretch to 2nd post, wire in place, proceed around fence. The fence will be tight, will last many, many years. Depending upon frost depth, you may need to go deeper...you want the posts sitting below the frost line, for a deep freeze could mess up the posts...purchase posts accordingly, drill holes accordingly. Once finished stringing fencing, finish off posts with post caps that fit the posts. Easy, fast, and not that expensive...but you may need permits...wood fences rarely need permits, chain links do. Good luck.

  3. hole digger - cement
