What do I need to install on my computer to be able to do things with photo's after I have scanned them?

I am scanning pictures from my 35 mm camera and when I click "edit" through my Lexmark 6100 series program, it doesn't give me options to Cut, crop, change the color...or anything good. All it's letting me do it change the size or paint and put c**p all over. GRRR!!! I need to crop!!
