  1. There is quite a bit to know. If you can, take someone with you that has some experience. It's too easy to make mistakes that can't be easily corrected if you try it on your own. Here's an article that has a lot of good tips in it:

    http://www.used-car-advisor.com/buy-used...

    Good luck.

  2. before you buy the car have it checked out by a mechanic well worth the money

  3. www.carbuytips.com - this site has all the information you need.

  4. When you find the car you want, look up its value on the internet, like on kelly blue book which is kbb.com, and work around that price when your negotiating for the price of the car, hope this helps

  5. If you're afraid to be taken, you'd be crazy to even look at a car before you check to see what it's worth.  So do that.  If you go to a dealer, a salesman may be very skillful at manipulating people.  If you are susceptible to manipulation, then take somebody else with you who is going to be contrary to that.  Everybody knows somebody who's contrary, so this is a chance for them to do something useful.

It's important, in my opinion, to understand that cars require repairs and maintenance. You will be paying for that.  Don't think that just because you had to buy the car, that the car somehow knows that and won't need anything.  Take that into consideration.  A lot of people say they have $5000 to spend on a car.  If they had any wits, they'd consider spending $2500 on a car and having $2500 in the cookie jar for repairs.  Do you have that kind of wits? Most people don't.  They just assume that nothing on earth is going to cost any money, ever. That ain't how it is.
