  1. go to http://www.howstuffworks.com/gps.htm .. this is the direct link to how GPS works and what you need to know when purchasing/shopping for one.

  2. Not too much you need to know...go with the major brand names: Garmin. Magellan, and TomTom...because if you get a a GPS that company goes under within months then you are stuck with outdated maps.

Most, but not all GPS systems come loaded with Canada.

I personally think Garmin is the best, then Magellan and last TomTom. TomTom is usually the cheapest of the three though. TomTom in my opinion seems to be better for Europe and their maps aren't quite as good for the US as Garmin and Magellan(though its still good). Most people who havent have any GPS before if they get a TomTom they are statified, but most people that had another brand perfer the other two other TomTom.

Anyways depending on your tech need GPS can range from $150-$900

The basic models starting around $150-200 are simple GPS get you where you need to go. The higher the model the more features you'll get like live traffic updates, bluetooth calling, voice recognition, text to speech street names, multiple point routing, etc...

Since I like Garmin more and you are looking for Canada maps starting with the Garmin Nuvi 250 you'll get preloaded Canada maps.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NW0...

At the link you can see customer's reviews(it got a 4.5 out 5...pretty good) and a chart called "Which nüvi is Best for You?" which will give you everything you need to know to pick the best GPS for you.

Hope you have a nice trip!!!
