I live in NC, and I will be visiting a lodge on the coast of the Osa Peninsula/San Drake Bay area in a few months (april). I was wondering what I needed to know when it comes to vaccinations, drinking water (is it safe, etc.), do you have any suggestions, what should I do to prepare, etc.

Thanks!

PS. We are staying at Las Caletas, if anyone has any input on this inn, feel free to give some!

  1. You will have a wonderful vacation.  The water is  fine, and no special vaccinations are required.  I have lived in Golfito, Costa Rica for the past 10 years, on the other side of the Gulfo Dulce.  You should bring hiking shoes, some kind of bug repellent, suntan lotion, a few books to read, and a good attitude.  There are many and varied activities available in this area.  A Spanish English dictionary would be useful if you don't speak Spanish.

  2. hi are you staying in las caletas jaco or osa peninsula ...about the water you could purchase bottle water everywere so that is not a problem and you dont need any vaccinations at all

what are you planning to do in osa peninsula ....hey visit us in jaco lets keep in touch   efickett2005@yahoo.com

  3. I've been around that area many times and it is gorgeous, but you do need to know that you are going to be visiting a very extreme place, from the weather point of view to the vegetation/fauna around.

So, my first recommendation is if you are thinking of bringing ANY electronics with you (like camera, Ipod, phone, etc) get yourself a "dry box" and keep them in there whenever you are not using them, this area is very humid and can easily damage them.

Bring also very, very light clothing and even better if it's some kind of "easy to dry" type of fabrics...

Good walking boots and treats to eat during the day (granola bars, dried fruits, etc) and a good "Camel Back" to carry water with you at all time.... I would say those are the best tips,

Oh! also watch out for snakes in the area!

Besides that it is a wonderful place and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

  4. You'll be fine if you do your research. Read this trip report, not to scare, but to enlighten. It is from the Drake Bay area.
