What do I need to look for when getting an engine swap?

I want to do an engine swap in a Toyota Cressida Grande. I currently have a 7mge engine. I want to swap the engine out for a 7mgte or a 1jzgte.

I need to know what to look for when picking the engine I am buying for the swap so to make sure i pick a good one with no problems. What do I need to look for???

I assume you are looking for a used engine.

The first thing to check is the compression ratio of each of the cylinders.  This is the best single test you can do to determine how well the engine was cared for.  The closer to original spec, the better off you will be down the road.
