Hello,

I recently got my US student visa approved and I'm planning to go to US next month under F-1.

What are the things that I need to take with me.

I thought of buying a new notebook, but many say they are very cheap in US. I have to take books i suppose. I am thinking of buying spiral CR books, and A4 paper rolls. Highlight pens. Regular pens and pencils, Denim Jeans, T shirts.

I am going to stay at a hostel so I really need to think what else I might need.

What else should I take with me? I can take 50Kgs with me on my plane. Please help me sought out the things.

  1. I agree with the first answer, especially this:

"All that I really packed was clothes, a few mementos and some basic things from my home country which are hard to find or unavailable in the U.S."

Laptop computers are a dime a dozen here, and it's good to buy local just in case something goes wrong.

And with web-based ordering and shipping, there isn't much else you cannot put your hands on quickly.

I spend three years living in Japan.  I went over with one bag.  All I ever had to get from the US were some clothes and shoes.  I'm 6'7". :-)

  2. Take a look at this list of supplies you might want to bring:

Also, did you check with the hostel to see if you need bedding? Obviously you can get that in the US, but it's just something to keep in mind.

  3. Really all you need is clothes. The rest of the stuff, you can pick up in the U.S. for cheaper and it will save you lugging them around the airport with you everywhere.

As for books, pens, binders etc I pick up my yearly supply at Office Max in the U.S. for about $50-$80.

Since you are staying in a hostel when you arrive, I would recommend taking the usual toiletries, since some hostels have no such things unlike hotels.

Also pack a few novel books you may need something to read. I would consider purchasing a map of the state you are going to be able to find your way around a little easier and to help you look at where potential apartments are located.

All that I really packed was clothes, a few mementos and some basic things from my home country which are hard to find or unavailable in the U.S.

The rest you can purchase in the U.S and are not worth the extra weight carrying around with you everywhere.

  4. Okay, for your carryon, ABSOLUTELY NO LIQUIDS except for contact solution. All liquids, like shampoo and stuff, have to be in checked luggage. Besides, it's cheaper just to buy it in the US anyway.

I would just bring clothes and the books you need to have with you. Everything else is pretty cheap if you go to Wal-Mart or Meijer. I would bring trail mix or granola bars for the plane, though. You're allowed to have that.
