I'm planning on attending a gun show in California and might purchase a pistol if I find a good deal. What paperwork do I need to have with me to purchase a pistol there? Thanks in advance.

  1. Your license for carrying a concealed firearm and some cash

    get a S&W .357 magnum

  2. You should have a photo ID (California Driver's License) another proof of residence (CCL, Utility Bill, Automobile Registration, Passport) and your HSC (Handgun Safety Certificate).  In reality if you have none of these you can still "buy" a pistol, you will probably even be able to start the necessary state and federal paperwork, but until those I have listed are provided to the dealer they will not be able to record the transaction with the California DOJ.  Your pistol will be held by the dealer 10 days after the sale is recorded with the state.  You will also need to provide information regarding your state approved safe (Make and Model/physical characteristics) or a receipt for an approved gun lock that is not more than 30 days old.  Remember that you can buy your pistol from anyone and pick it up from a local dealer--you don't have to use the designated "Transfer Dealer" if you don't want to.  Also be aware that "parking lot" sales are illegal, so make sure any sale is made through a dealer.  There is no "Gun Show Loophole".
