I was originallly planning to spend thousands of dollars this Christmas to overhaul my light display. After I figured out that there was no way that I could afford such a thing I began thinking of what Christmas is really about. I want to build upwards of a 75 foot tall cross covered in clear lights. I believe this will be a good focus on what Christmas is all about. Problem is what can I make this out of that I can stand up or hoist up with somewhat ease? I think PVC would be to limp and steel too heavy.....Any suggestions....I know this is early but I want to know ahead of time what Im going to use and do.... 10pts for great idea!!!!!

  1. do you know how high 75" is that is over 7 stories

  2. A 75 foot cross sounds crazy to me!  I don't understand how building something that huge is connected to the true meaning of Christmas.  A 10 or 15 foot cross would still be spectacular and would get people thinking about the original cross.  You could give the money saved on construction and your electric bill to charity instead - that definitely is the true spirit of Christmas.

If you are still determined to go ahead, I think you would have to use thin beams connected in a triangular pattern to get that high (think of the way electricity pylons are constructed.)

  3. before you do this.. check in on your ordinances and deed restrictions..      your method sounds fine
