Question:

What do I tell my 6 yr old about an erection?

He is waking up with an erection and I don't know how to explain what it's for. I did try to tell him that it did that so that when he gets big, he can help his wife have a baby. This just didn't seem to soak in. He thinks it's funny and will show it to me and laugh, until I get mad and make him go get dressed.

  1. First of all, that is perfectly normal to have a morning erection.  At age 6, he is still too young to understand about s*x and sexual issues.  Tell him it's his own "little boy" (or something like that).  Perhaps you could make up a funny name for what is happening; then even if he says the name in public, no one will know what it means.  If he persists in boasting about it, tell him that it is just like "poo poo" and "pee pee"--the time and place for those words is in the bathroom.

  2.    Just try not to make a big deal about it and he won't either.
