Question:

What do I tell my eye doctor during my exam if I can't read one of the lines on the eye chart?

I can't read most of the lines with my left eye because I have awful vision in it; 20/200. This is my first appointment with this optometrist, and he doesn't know how bad my vision is in that one eye. Also, do I wear my contacts to my appointment?

  1. you shouldnt wear contacts- just take them with you just in case. if you cant read the lines, simply tell him "i dont see any of the letters". he might give you huge letters.

    hope i helped! :)

  2. Just say - Chart, what chart.  He'll take it from there.

  3. You can wear your contacts to your appointment. The dr. will have you remove them before the exam. If you can't read a line, just tell him honestly. The dr.'s see people with all sorts of vision problems. You have nothing to be embarrassed about! Good luck!

  4. wear your lenses, but be prepared to take them out. If you can't read/see something, you say I can't see that...

  5. Be totally honest.  The hardest things someone can do is try to help without correct information.

  6. Just read what the letters look like. he will see if you are struggling.

  7. Do you have glasses to wear? I would leave the contacts out, but they could ask you to take them out at the apt if you cant go without.

What do you tell the Dr.? You tell everything, you say what you can and cannot see, they need to know all of it, to give you the correct prescription.. Don't hold anything back.

  8. You should wear your contacts because the doctor will want to see how they are fitting on your eyes.  It may also be helpful for him if you take an unopen one with you so he knows the brand and size.  You will have to take them out for other parts of the exam, though.

When you go in, the doctor will probably ask you something like, "What brings you in today?"  Once you say that you're there for a checkup, feel free to mention that your vision in your left eye isn't so great, so that he knows.  But even if you don't tell him, he will figure it out.

And feel free to say, "I can't see that" or "I can't make out that line."  He will probably ask you to guess at some points, so feel free to guess and don't be worried about being wrong or pleasing the doctor.  Just be honest so he can get your prescription right.  :)

  9. be honest and tell him/her what you can or cant see
