What do I use in the seams between hardibacker & sheetrock?

I am installing hardibacker in my tub/shower area. There is preexisting sheetrock outside of that area. I just do not know if I use joint compound or mortar in the seams along with tape. Any help is appreciated

  1. Lib,

Use alkali resistant fiberglass tape and thinset mortar.  Joint compound will degrade with moisture on the inside of the tub/shower.  If you do not wish to carry the tile out past the area you have put thinset, install tile as far as you'd like and finish out the thinset part still showing with joint compound and paint.
