Question:

What do I wear to the Opera?

Me and my girlfriend are planning on attending the Metropolitan opera and I'm not sure what the proper attire is. I wouldn't even think about wearing jeans, but I'm curious to know what I should wear. Is a suit the norm for men? If so, any specific color? I assume women should wear a dress of some sort, but is a strapless dress not appropriate? Thanks for your help.

  1. you must wear a suit, something you would wear to a job interview but it must include a coat and tie, do not wear jeans. women should wear evening dress, same thing a woman would wear to a nice dinner.

  2. I assume you are talking about The Met in NYC.

Men wear a suit for daytime, dark suit (or tux) for the evening.  Make sure you don't wear white socks-- tacky.

Strapless depends on your age, but have her wear her nicest dress, her prettiest shoes, don't have bare legs, and have a bag that is appropriate, not Le Sport Sac.

Afternoon or evening would really only affect the length of the dress, unless it's the little black variety.

If you can't dress to the nines to go to the Met, there is nowhere in Heaven or on Earth you can.

    Have fun!!!!
