  1. Well, depends what rank they are. A Platoon Leader will have different responsibilities from a Battalion S-3 or Company Commander.

Here is a link to interviews with Infanty Lieutenants.

  2. NO they do not just supervise. You are the leader / commander of the platoon. You get issued Operation Orders from your commander and make a platoon Operations order. Your commander tells you your mission for your platoon and you plan out how you will utilize your troops. You give initial counseling  to your Platoon Sergeant. You along with your Platoon Sergeant submit awards for your Soldiers. Everything that happens or fails to happen it your responsibility as a platoon leader. You act as a counselor to your Soldiers. You are directly in charge of your Squad Leaders and you Platoon Sergeant. You if not prior service enlisted better take advice from your Platoon Sergeant and Squad leaders as they typically will have more experience than you. If you are prior experience, you will still take there experience into consideration. Why, allot of prior experience soldiers that become officers think they are to good to take advice. I was in that situation, but I still took there advice and it is a good thing cause they know there soldiers well. you supervise the training of your Soldiers, but also should go through the training. This will show the Soldiers that you are willing to do what you expect of them.

Thats all I got for now, but there is so much more to being an officer. People just do not realize. A lot of new Platoon Leaders do not realize what power they have because a lot of them are inexperienced. However  do not forget you are the boss. But if you are not experienced, IE not prior service you better take you NCO advice into consideration. If not you will have a bad OER and not be successful. Personally as a former officer I think you have no need to be an officer if you have never been enlisted. I just think that it makes you that much better as an officer.
