What do Italians typically eat at an italian wedding for dessert?

I am getting married this month, and our reception is in an italian restaurant-they only serve cappacino(I don't know how to spell this word) as the dessert, but my Dad would like something else. He has suggested something called "Italian Wedding Cake" with coconut in it, but the european bakery does not sell this type of cake. Would you please give me typical desserts served at your countries weddings? Ciao!

  1. In Italy we NEVER have Cappuccino for dessert like they thinks in all the world; we just have it for breakfast! The typical wedding dessert is usually a cake, we don't have a particular one it depends for which cake the newlyweds prefer. Usually it's a cake with different flats covered with whipped cream but is very popolar also a fruit cake or a "millesfoglie"

  2. tiramisu or spumoni

  3. ZUPPA INGLESE or MERINGA!

  4. Correct spelling is "cappuccino" but I wonder how is possible in an Italian restaurant they serve it as the dessert....!!

In Italy we just take it for breakfast or as a break-coffee in the middle of the day....!!

This said, I guess you live in Las Vegas (if I'm not wrong by reading yr previous questions) and I feel you can find there a bakery that's able to prepare an Italian wedding cake.

The Italian tradition is for the wedding cakes at 3-5 plans (floors?), generally it's a kind of millefoglie, filled with cream and this must be easy to be prepared by any bakery.

However day by day this has been replaced, mainly in the spring-summer time, by 'lighter' cakes based on fruits like

    strawberries, peaches,kiwi, orange,etc.

The most popular wedding cakes (you can have them either on a multiplan or in flat cakes) are :

    MILLE FOGLIE

    Puff pastry with Chantilly cream.

    TORTA MIMOSA

Sponge cake filled with Bavarian cream and vanilla.

It has a tipical yellow color.

    CROSTATA DI FRUTTA

    Fruit tart with vanilla cream.

It can be made with just one fruit (generally strawberries) or mixed fruits.

    ST. HONORE'

Puff pastry, sponge cake, cream puffs and chantilly cream.

    DIPLOMATICA:

Puff pastry base, sponge cake, vanilla cream or chantilly cream.

    TORTA CHANTILLY:

Sponge cake, Chantilly cream, white chocolate shavings on top. (mainly in winter).

I see other answerers suggesting 'gelato'.

This is also served in the Italian wedding meals but as a rule is additional to the wedding cake. Under no circumstances it can replace it ...!!

For any guess feel free emailing me.

I'm not so used to describe cakes in English and I might have made some mistake that I could clear you up by email.

Best wishes for yr wedding day.

  5. Tiramisu and gelato are great- But in Italy, they serve cake, just like us, with gelato (ice cream)  my family lives there- I have been to 3 weddings there..

  6. Tiramisu, but be sure to get a good one because they are made differently in this country. Find authentic Tiramisu!

  7. gelato.
