What do Italians typically eat?

What do true Italians (not Italian Americans, etc.) consume on a daily basis? I am not talking about holidays, or family functions.

  1. pasta and  pizza


  2. Lasagna, spaghetti, breads, wines, ravioli, pizza, linguine, chicken alfredo, canolis, manicotti, stuffed shells.

  3. a regular lunch in my home (piemont region) consists of a plate of pasta, them meat or cheese, vegetables..maybe fresh salad, sauteed veg, and after a piece of fruit, don't forget the fresh bread and the wine. Dinner has an appetizer, pasta, then a main course again with vegetables, bread and wine.. Always after each meal fresh fruit.  Dessert on special occasions. The pasta isn't always with tomato suace, but many times made with vegetables only.

  5. We eat lots of carbs. Pasta, bread, pizza and rice are staple foods.

    Season veggies and fruits also have an important part in the Italian diet.

    Meat, fish, cheese and eggs are consumed with moderation also because of the rising prices.

  8. just came back from Italy, I would definately agree that they eat alot of fish.

  9. Lots of olive oil, fresh fruits, veggies, seafood and pasta.  But, not like you get here---pasta with olive oil and veggies.  You can get a marinara sauce but it's basic---tomato and basil--not full of sugar.  Food in Italy is so good because it is fresh and basic.

Im Italian but dont eat a lot of things that they eat but I speak Italian, have been there and study it in school and I come from a well rounded italian family: Pasta, Pizza, Bread, Cheese (mozzarella, parmagiana, riccotta,) FISH (calamari, salmon, halibut) Vegetables (eggplant, olives, asparagus) and Meats (veal, ox tail, beef,) Watch Everyday Italian on Food Network (they also love their salads)

  14. because italy is a penninsula surrounded by the meditteranian ocean, the diet of most italians consists of fish and a lot of it. seafood is a main staple although in northern italy pasta is consumed just like here in the states

  15. pasta, pizza, prosciutto, prosciutto cotto (ham), mozzarella, ricotta, pollenta, bread, sausage, chicken, callamari, shrimp (if you go to a restaurant, the shrimp still have the heads on), croissant with jelly or nutella (chocolate), risotto (rice with vegetables, etc)

  16. Italians are just like you or me. They eat exactly what we eat. Although, they tend to love pasta, bread, rice.. etc

  17. My grandma is a full blood italian straight from italy and she eats like anyone else but she always cooks pasta. also my grandpa used to own a pizza shop and he makes homeade pizza sometimes.

    The typikal Italian like pasta, lasagne, pizza, cake, sweets, banana, ananas, strabery...

    The Italian eat the most with bread or chees (parmigano). When they go out they have many to eat and it can cost a lot.

    Italian aren't canny.

  21. Fish, vegetables and olive oil.  American Italian food is not the same as you would get on a day to day basis in Italy unless you hung out it the tourist traps.

    a brioche (like a croissant), espresso, maybe some milk

    Lunch/pranzo

    Pasta w/a variety of sauces, depending on what's fresh and available that day.

    A meat, which could be thinly sliced grilled beef, grilled fish, octopus, prawns, etc.  Again, everything is fresh so the selection depends.

    A vegetable, such as roasted artichoke, or a salad of fennel or romaine with tomatoes, with either an olive oil w/lemon dressing, or olive oil w/red wine vinegar.  None of the typical salad dressings eaten in the US.

    Some fresh semolina bread.

    A dessert, either fresh fruit or pastries bought fresh from a bar that morning.

    Supper/cena

    A sandwich or a bowl of pastina in a broth,an arancino or cippolina, usually nothing very heavy.  Lunch is the largest meal of the day.

I recently spent 3 weeks in Italy so heres the answer: Pasta and any form of it, bread (they typically have bread in every meal =P), Riscitto (there are many differt kinds but the most common consist of Rice,Tomatoes,and Meat) and Finally, Gilotto, the most ah-mazing Italian Ice Cream ever!
