  1. They keep the voltage at a constant rate. It will also prevent voltage spikes. A good example are cars. The voltage is generated by the alternator which varies with speed - could be from 12 volts to 14 volts. The radio, for example, need a constant 12 volts. The regulator makes sure 14 volts never gets fed to the radio.
