Question:

What do YOU put in your goulash?

I asked a similar question to this a couple of days ago, with little response, so I'm going to try again :)

I've been thinking about trying to make goulash, similar to what my mother used to make. The problem is, she never did write down what was in it, and my father doesn't remember much of it. I will most likely wind up just experimenting to see what I like and make it my own...

However, I don't know all that can be put in, and still taste good. I already know some of the things I will be using in it, which includes;

Deer sausage (love it, and we have tons)

Elbow macaroni

Chopped green pepper

Chunked tomatoes

Chopped vidalia (sp?) onion

Better to use tomato PASTE or tomato JUICE? What are some other things that you add to your goulash? I am open to any ideas! :)

  1. do ou use any spices? i always put season salt and garlic powder in my goulash also i would use half tomotoe juice and half tomotoe paste it is very tasty that way. Then throw in some diced chilis ....very tasty! good luck

  2. My mother-in-law uses 1lb ground beef, 2 cans tomato sauce, 2 tbsp vinegar, 2 tbsp mustard, elbow macaroni, and I always add some onions.  The vinegar and mustard is to taste, she never wrote down how much I just guess.

  3. My mother used about 1/2 of a large bag of elbow macaroni (I think it was a 2 pound bag), 1 and 1/2 pounds of ground beef, 2 cans tomato sauce, 1/3 can of tomato paste, and a medium to large yellow onion.  Naturally, S and P.  That was for 5 people, so you'll need to adjust.

  4. I make mine with hambuger, & onion fried up together, drain the grease off.

Then I cook the elbow mac til done, then drain.

Once drained, I put in 1 can of tomato soup, 2 cans of tomato sauce (ad a 3rd if need be).

Then, I put in garlic powder, onion powder, basil, organo, salt & pepper to taste.

Then I top it off with parassion chesse

  5. Here's mine

  6. My grandma's recipe was burger, red onion, garlic, green pepper, elbow mac, Hungarian paprika (a good Tbsp.), a can of tomato soup, a can of cheddar cheese soup, green olives (can't leave those out!), and throw it in a casserole, top with shredded cheddar and bake until hot.  I lived on this as a kid, she knew I loved it, but didn't write down recipes either!  Luckily I was able to cobble together this one after 20 years of trying to remember it, and it's just like grandma's!
