  1. The difference, like any profession, is that low level guys do what they're told and 'admin' types, do the telling.  What I mean is that as you move up and become a supervisor or manager, you start looking at why you are doing the things you do.  Like,"why do I need to install this new software? What value does it bring to the business?"  Once you decide why a technology is good for a company, then you get to tell the lower techs to implement it.  It's always good to stay hands-on and understand how things work, but when you start understanding why you are using them, that is when you move from low level tech to admin.

It depends where you live and who you work for, but entry level techs can make anywhere between 25k and 50k depending on your experience/education.  Moving up, good sys admins or network admins can easily make $100-$150.

I'm an IT Director that came up from doing helpdesk less than 8 years ago.  I also have 2 degrees in MIS.  It gives a good balance of technology and business.

The link in my sources lets you put in all kinds of job titles to find info on salary's.
