For those of you who don't know, Title XI is a law that was passed to force schools to create equal sports opportunities for girls and guys.

But it hasn't worked out exactly like what was envisioned.

  1. Why don't you explain exactly what you think WAS envisioned then?

And the guy above me is right, it is Title IX

  2. Title IX did not make things as equal as they had hoped.  But it did help.  I was involved with a women's sports back when Title IX started to take effect.  When I started with the college team, they were taking the personal vehicles of the coaches.  They had 2 coaches in the college.  One was swimming and tennis.  The other coach worked field hockey, volleyball, basketball, softball and fencing.  No men's coaches worked more than 1 sport except cross country in the fall and track in the spring.  On road trips, both coaches would drive the team in their personal station wagons.  The coaches brought sandwiches and drinks.  There was no meal money.

After Title IX, the women's team got to take 2 vans to the away games and they had some meal money.

Before Title IX, the gyms were called the women's gym and the men's gym.  The women's gym had room for one row of seats around the courts.  The men's gym had nice bleachers all the way around.   The women got to play some of their home games in what was the men's gym.  The gyms became the small gym and the big gym instead of the women's and men's gyms.

I still think what has shocked people the most is that once the sports were "balanced", that the women were not allowed to add a sport without the men adding a sport.

While the legislators that wrote Title IX envisioned exact equality between the men's sports and the women's sports, it did not quite happen.  Women's sports have shown tremendous growth due in part to Title IX.
