Do they actually have to administer the medicine? I want to pursue a medical profession, but I don't know which. When people ask me what I want to be when I grow up, I just tell them that I want to be a doctor... but then they ask what kind of doctor, and I'm stumped. I want to be something that has to do with medicine, but not a surgeon. I want to be someone that makes the medicine... would you call that an anesthesiologist, or a pharmacist maybe?

  1. put people to sleep..and make lots of money

  2. They put people to sleep during surgery and make a TON of money!!!!

  3. They are the people that come in before surgery and give medicine to a patient to pretty much make their surgery very plesent.

What you are thinking would be more on the lines of a pharmacist.

  4. Definition of Anesthesiologist

Anesthesiologist: A physician or, less often, a dentist who is specialized in the practice of anesthesiology, the branch of medicine involving the use of drugs or other agents that cause insensibility to pain.

There is a major distinction between an anesthesiologist and an anesthetist. An anesthesiologist has a doctorate whereas an anesthetist does not. An anesthetist is a nurse or technician trained to administer anesthetics.

  5. I was vacationing in Canada.  Lovely up there!

Anyway, what do we do?  We keep people safe, alive and comfortable during surgery and other painful or stressful procedures.  Despite the common misconception, we are not the highest paid physicians.  (I wish!)

We DO administer the medications (we don't make them, even pharmacists don't really make them, though they might mix things together once in a while).  We also get to put IV's arterial lines, and central lines in people, intubate the trachea by various means, and do all sorts of nerve blocks.  My favorite things to do are spinals and epidurals - there's nothing like the thrill of putting a 3 1/2 inch needle in someone's spine!  :)

As far as people asking you what kind of physician you'd like to be, just look them right in the eyes and tell them that you're waiting until your clinical rotations in med school to make that decision!  Seriously, what do they expect?  It's OK not to know now.  You'll figure it out when the time is right.

Good luck.  May be someday I'll see you at the American Society of Anesthesiologists meeting?  Whatever you decide to go into, as long as YOU love it, it's the right choice!

  6. Tell them you want to be an adult, now I want to be a kid.   A pharmacist is the one who makes the medicine, or at least hands it out.  Researchers "make " the medicine.  The anesthetist is the one who puts the patient under during surgery.

  7. They give patients anesthetics before, during, and after surgery.

They also have a huge malpractice insurance!

  8. Anesthesiologists study all the relevant information about a particular patient, weight, metabolism, is she pregnant, does he have high blood pressure, etc. and then work out the best way to keep a patient unconscious of pain for the length of time necessary for the surgeon to do his job, and remove the patient from the operating theater.  To do this effectively, an anesthesiologist requires a high understanding of physiology, which is the justification for the Ph.D.  An anesthetist, on the other hand, is more like a highly qualified nurse, who puts the mask on the patient, then turns on the gas, and keeps checking the patient and adjusting the dosage.  Both anesthesiologists and anesthetists see a lot of blood.

If you want to be a medical doctor of any kind, you are going to have to come to terms with the sight of blood.  Being a pharmacist, and handing out pills is not a way to avoid it.  If a baby needs to be delivered, and there is no nurse or midwife close by, then people will look to you to deal with the matter.  The same with first-aid at traffic accidents, etc.  A degree in biochemistry, and a job in medical research might be more suitable, or a degree in nutrition.

  9. Why don't you enroll in some classes and find out what your interests are and go from there?  It sounds like research might be your thing if you want to be someone that makes the medicine.  We need more people like you to help find cures for the many diseases out there! Good luck.

  10. they make a real cool and  EZ 400k per anum is what they DO......................put some demerol and glycerine into a neddle according to kilogram of body weight and insert it into an IV.......................so EZ and they get 50 grand

  11. An anesthesiologist (American English), or anaesthetist (British English), also "anaesthesiologist," is a medical doctor trained to administer anesthesia and manage the medical care of patients before, during, and after surgery. Anesthesiologists have one of the highest paying jobs in society.

(It takes about 12 years to train fully as an anesthesiologist)

I suggest if you want  to deal with medicine i suggest becoming a pharmacist if you want to actually work with the medicine.

  12. They put you under for surgery. It's a very dangerous profession, as a lot of people are allergic to anaesthesia and the amout you administer has to be right on the money or you could have someone slip into a coma or worse yet, wake up during a procedure! Henceforth, the big bucks.

  13. anesthesiologists are dr's that administer medication that makes you sleep during surgery. they also are responsible for keeping you alive during the surgery.

  16. Where is Pangolin now? She is the top answerer and an anesthesiologist. She can tell you with details what an anesthesiologist do.

  17. They administer the drugs during surgery to make you fall asleep, and they monitor the patient thought the surgery, to make sure they don't wake up and experience any pain. Also they administer epidermals to women in labor.

You need alot of schooling just to become one.

  18. Anesthesiologists are doctors that have specialized in the administration of medecine to induce and maintain unconciousness for surgery.

You have plenty of time to decide what speciality you would like to persue and your training in medical school will surely help you with that descision.

  19. they give the patients medicine so they can sleep through the surgery and not feel anything.

  20. go work for elilly

  21. they are the people who administer and measure the amount of anestisha and and prepare it to use either in human or animal surgery

  22. anesthesiologists have to figure out first what amount and what kind of anestesia would have the least residual or immediate effects on you, then administer them. If someone were to wake up during surgery or not wake up after surgery, is a huuuuuge problem.

  23. It would a pharmacist researcher. You'd work in a drug company making the drugs and testing them. An anesthesiologist administers drugs that will cope with pain.

  24. Become a chemist and work for the drug companies.
