Animal totems are spirit guides in animal form that provide protection, guidance, and healing. Usually a person will have one or two prominent guides and others who will come to you as needed. For example: Deer might represent "pathfinder" and is telling you to trust your instincts in a particular matter.

In addition to what Gianni said, sometimes animal totems come into our lives temporarily because they have specific lessons to teach us at the time, or messages that we need to hear, or are there to guide us through a particular situation.  

What they represent depends on the animal.

I would recommend the book "Animal Speak" by Ted Andrews, it is a great book on learning more about animal totems and has extensive information on each specific totem.
