What do bosses do if you dont show for a shift?

Depends on the conditions and terms of your employment.  Most employers would fire you unless you had a valid excuse for missing work and they agreed to accept your reason.  

Unless you worked under a contract that allowed you "not to show up for a shift", you probably couldn't contest the firing. If you don't call in and tell your boss, you won't be able to make it in for that shift, you're in essence abandoning your job,

I wouldn't take chances by not showing up for work.  It doesn't make you look like a very conscientious employee.

if you don't call off, typically a write up or some sort of disciplinary action. It depends on your position...and your company policy. Check the employee handbook

If your job is in California, any of the following could happen: 1) You could fired on the spot as California is a "Fire & Quit At Will" state; 2) You could get a Verbal Warning; 3) You could get a Written Warning;

As a former Plant Foreman,I Would let the Companys policies on the issue dictate what would be done,I would not show any emotions other than consern,and would always be fair and consistant,If I had to reprimand you in stages,I would sting and forgive ,and coach you to appear at your obligated work area,and when you have finally self terminated ,I would then search for your replacement and you will in time be forgotten,unless you got mad and killed me...Yikes

It depends on the company policy.  Most bosses will fire you.  Its called no-call/no-show.  Some companies have the third strike your out policy. I suggest you look over your employee handbook.
