If you look closely you will see a coil where there mouth should be. When they land on a flower they uncoil this tube and drink the nectar. Its a portable straw. If you approach a butterfly slowly when it lands on a flower you will be able to watch it drink. It does the same with water or even damp areas for some water.

Butterfly's do drink water however they can not suck it up like you think  You must first wet an area of land .

What they do is drink through there feet & anntenas

They like the juice from most sweet fruits, mostly nectar from flowers, and I believe it's 'Butterflies'
