No matter where you go online,no matter who you ask,you will always get mixed answers.

  I like feeding my birds Scratch (mixed grains),Layer Crumbles (vitamins/minerals needed to promote health and to help with vitamins/minerals that are lost when egg laying) and Oyster Shell (helps to strengthen the shell).

  I mix equal parts of scratch and crumbles (50lbs of each) and to that 100lbs of feed I will mix about 5 lbs of Oyster Shell.

  I have 11 ducks and 11 chickens (5 chicks but I feed them chick starter) and this mixture will last me about 3wks but then again I have been told that I over feed. Since the birds can't tell me when they are hungry I would rather over feed than under feed.

  All year round I treat with diced fresh veggies and fruits. . . and bread crumbs.

   In the spring/summer and late fall I let my chickens out ocassionally to graze on grass and bugs.

   In the winter time I feed them alfalfa hay.

   Greenery helps to make the egg yolks more yellow unlike the eggs you buy in the store. . . . and this is why.  Hens that lay eggs for the store are not given anything extra than formulated feed therefore their yolks aren't as yellow.

insects --mealworms and earthworms ,crickets ,grasshopers and mostly any insect

fresh greens that i feed mine include grapes.-onion chives -choped up onions-cilantro -lettuce-coliflower-brocoli(brocoli has calcium in it)-cabbage- bell peppers-corn -watermelon-potatos -beets-carrots-brusle sprouts and weeds from the garden they also love to eat my grass

the main thing people buy for chickens is called scrach it includes cracked corn -wheat-barley-and milo

with this feed i mix in some green split peas and lentils and rice and  oats and some parakeet food ( red and white millet)mix with some layer feed
