What do college coaches want?

Do you have to play a sport in high school in order to make the team at college level? Say swimming perhaps?

College coaches recruit primarily from High Schools. If you don't play a high school sport you're not going to draw the attention of the college coaches.

Swimming and Track might be two sports that you can draw college coaches by your times however. College Swim and Track coaches also use the Nationals are recruiting grounds.

College coaches are looking for athletes that can compete directly out of high school and can fill 'open holes' in their lineups.

I happened to be recruited heavily out of HS by coaches because a lot of 200 Flyers were graduating and needed to be replaced. I guess my timing was good as well.
