The Comanches were basically a southern plains tribe, pushed into the region by more powerful and numerous tribes. The Comanches soon transformed themselves into a militarily powerful tribe renowned for their raiding throughout west Texas and northern Coahuila, Mexico. By the mid-nineteenth century, the Comanches had become a large tribe of twelve loosely confederated bands. They were expert horsemen and prominent adversaries of United States citizens in Texas. Nomadic buffalo hunters, the Comanches dominated the country well into the 1870s, subordinating numerous adjacent tribes in the process.

In 1839-40, a smallpox epidemic took heavy toll on Comanches. Ten years later, a cholera outbreak resulted in



more fatalities than the smallpox plague killing about half of the tribe. In 1855, a reservation was established on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River and by 1857 over 400 comanches were collected there. They were later removed to tracts in the Indian Territory (Oklahoma) and in the Texas panhandle. Other Comanches continued the time-honored tradition of raiding deep into the recesses of Mexico. The route they took, which became known as the Great Comanche Trail, plunged southward past present-day Fort Stockton into present-day Big Bend National Park and thence across the Rio Grande into Mexico. Part of the rationale for establishing Fort Davis was to erect a post near the Comanche Trail to guard against such raids.

In 1874 - 75, military forces under Colonels Nelson A. Miles and Ranald Mackenzie struck the Comanches a severe blow in what has been dubbed the Red River War. Most of this campaign occurred in the Texas Panhandle. The Comanches were defeated and forced to return to their reservations. Prominent among the Comanche leaders of this era was Quanah Parker.
