What do comet goldfish eat?

My little sister got 2 new goldfish. I've watched her feed them to insure she takes out the food after 2 minutes. The Fantail goldfish ate but the comet goldfish wont. When we went to go get the goldfish I noticed in the comet gold fish tank ALL of them where going to the bottom for the tank and eating from these pellet looking things.

We are feeding the fish goldfish flakes.

But, does the comet goldfish need something else to eat or can it goldfish flakes? do we need to get it those pellets?

  1. Comet, of course.

  2. the seller probably feed them sinking pellets but goldfish flakes will do they just not used to it.

  3. i dont know

  4. Comets are bottom feeders.. You can still feed flakes they will eat them after they fall to the bottom of the tank.

  5. Was the comet goldfish active when u buy it? If not that means is not good. But it was active but eat pellets, try giving some pellets and see if the Fantail and Comet will eat together. Then you will know. BUt if you the comet does  but not the fantail, then put some pellets and flakes at the same time so that will b perfect...I hope I help :D

  6. Fish food

  7. fish food, go to petsmart or petco for help

  8. Recommended Diet

Floating food labeled for Goldfish not Tropical Fish. Several other brands of Goldfish food are available in most stores that sell pet fish. Floating pellets are very good for larger pond fish and are also available in most stores that sell fish for ponds.

We have read advice elsewhere that all Goldfish should be fed sinking food, because when they take food off the surface, they will swallow air bubbles that will cause problems. This is contrary to our experience.

I just watched my Goldfish eat off the surface. After most mouthfuls of food, he burped a bubble or two of air out through his gill. The ancestors of this fish have been eating food off the surface of the water for a very long time. Of course they also ate off the bottom and at all levels of the water between the top and bottom too.

So don't worry about your Goldfish swallowing air while eating. Feeding food that floats is a good practice. If your fish don't eat all of the food in 10 minutes, get a net and remove the uneaten food. Click here for more about feeding.

  9. .....i raised goldfish for 5 years, and kept comets as well as fantails, etc

....the comets ate the very same 'goldfish flakes' that the fantails ate...just a littel pinch of food 2 times each day...if they eat it all in 2 minutes it is good...(easy to over do it)

..old food makes new ammonia too, along with the fish p**p

....occasionally, i fed them little skinny earthworms from the garden compost....they loved them too

....i washed the worms in water and rinsed them in a bowl of tank water...then just dropped them in whole

...sometimes the really big earthworms could be diced up and dropped in as bite sized pieces

....the goldfish pellets are also good choices for comets if yours really do not seem to want to the eat flakes...we all spoil our fish to some extent, i mean it!

...they also eat green peas and carrot cubes from those 'frozen mixed veggies bags'

....an orange can be sliced thinly and pieces floated in teh tank as treats on water change days

.....after the orange floats for a while it is best to remove the slices, and then you can change some water too

.....oh, by the way, ammonia sinks to the bottom of tanks

....so, by trying to change the bottom water is good

....if you have a vaccum tube, that is perfect because it pull sfrom the bottom as well as pulling up the old p**p and debris

....try to get a plastic bucket too, from Wal-Mart, that is only used for your tank water stuff, so it stays clean

.....get some live plants too, they will help absorb some ammonia and fish really like plants to hide in and rest out of direct sight of other fish

.....java moss is one that can float in a bowl or small tank

...i prefer the grassy plants, such as dwarf mondo grass, which eat a lot more ammonia than other types of plants
