  1. It is for the slides. Changeing them from auto to man. A SAA flight attendant forgot to do this in a A340-300 the other day and they ended up with a slide down the A/C standing safely at the gate in Johannesburg.

  2. It's to make sure the slides are deactivated so they don't blow when they open the doors.  They say the same thing (crosscheck) before push back and startup to ensure the slides are activated and the red flags are across the door window.

Crosscheck refers to the doors on each side of the aircraft.

Cross check is also used in the cockpit to compare instrument readings and setting between the captain and first officer, but this isn't announced over the PA.

  3. the doors get changed from auto back to manual and its so the attendents check each others work. Ie the slides open if the doors aint on manual along with other issues

  4. checking all procedures with a cross meaning everything has to be done as said on the manuals.. step by step, it's about safety

  5. When the aircraft has landed and parked at the gate the doors are put back from 'automatic' to 'manual' mode. Each attendant seated next to a door is responsible for switching it to manual. However, as a safety precaution, the attendant from the OPPOSITE door is supposed to check that door too and that is what the 'crosscheck' is about.
