Correctional officers in CA make a decent income. In parts of CA, 70K (topped out correctional officer) will go a long ways... but in other parts, 70K is chump change.

In CA, you get a step raise every 6 months until you're topped out. After 2 yrs, you're off probation and get another significant raise.

If you choose to promote, your income and benefit package also increase. A SGT with 3 yrs rank makes around 85K with no overtime.

At the same time, you receive health insurance, dental, vision, retirement and union benefits... all have value that isn't factored into your annual salary.

State correctional officer pay is comparable to CA Highway Patrol... tho their benefit package is better.

As I am sure you can understand, this is highly jurisdictional. In Ohio, the starting pay is $15.50 per hour ( or $31,000 per year). This is base pay. You can add roll call, shift differential, holiday pay ( it is a 24/7 operation and you WILL work holidays until you have enough seniority to take them off) and any extra duty pay such as bilingual translator, hazardous duty pay, etc.

The progression rate is contractural in Ohio and you top after 7 years on the job. The current top pay is now $22.00 per hour  ( or $44,000 per year).

After 5 years service, you also start receiving longevity pay, which is paid hourly in addition to your normal salary level.

I work minimal overtime (except for two 6 week period when I have to recertify 237 Officers in firearms and then I am working 7 days a week to get it done in time) and my gross pay on my taxes is $75,000 with all the additional rates being added in.
