Ok, here's the story. My piano teacher gives me a tip that will help me remember the bass staff:All Cows Eat Grass. And I told him that not all cows eat grass. Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah...and today, during the lesson, it came up again, and then he says that cows have these microbes in their body so when they eat, they spit it back out and eat it again. Gross...I know. So does anyone know what cows eat BESIDES grass??

  1. Vegetables like onions and stuff. Yea i heard they have 4 chambered stomachs and eat grass ( or vegetables) and spit it back in their mouths and eat it again.

  2. Purina Cow Chow!  Actually the truth is not far off.  Most cattle in feed lots these days are fed fresh hay, silage and pelletized food, which is nutritious things they really like, like potato meal and cottonseed meal mixed with hay, rolled grains and molasses and pressed into miniature Presto Logs.

If Purina made a Cow Chow, it would be something like that.

  3. Many types of grasses and other vegetation- including grain. Grain is cheaper (mostly) and in cattle raised for meat, it helps to promote rapid growth and weight gain. A plus for cattle farms.

Though grass is the traditional diet for cattle, in recent decades, the use of grain to feed cattle is preferred due to its lower cost and faster harvest time. The most popular are wheat, maize, rice, barley, soybean, and cane sugar.

Your teacher meant to say this... "Cattle are ruminants, meaning that they have a digestive system that allows use of otherwise indigestible foods by repeatedly regurgitating and rechewing them as "cud." The cud is then reswallowed and further digested by specialized microorganisms in the rumen. These microbes are primarily responsible for decomposing cellulose and other carbohydrates into volatile fatty acids that cattle use as their primary metabolic fuel."

But that isn't always the case, dissections of cow stomachs show that the eat many odd things too- such as the cow who accidentally ate some metal (found in the stomach later on).

  4. Cows eat grass and flowers also other stuff like hay. Your teacher is wrong they eat more then grass. Plus they drink milk too.

  5. In the fall the farmers take the pumpkins which may holes or are broken which they can not sell and feed them to the cows.

I wonder what the milk tastes like?
