What do cruise ships do with wasted food on board?

Throw it away.  I have been on a lot.. and they know about how much of things they are oging to need,, and I am sure they fall short sometimes:  wanted banana nut muffins, and they were out.  

I don't see much food being thrown away /// we all clear our plates.

I asked this once when I was cruising and the waiter told me that the "unseen crew" (busboys, waiters, porters, etc) all get the uneaten food from the plates of the diners.  I thought this was disgusting but the waiter told me it is far better than the food the ship gives to the crew.
