Like most meds, they are helpful if the condition for which they were prescribed really exists. They are benzodiazepines, the family of anti-anxiety medications. They help to relieve both mental and physical symptoms of anxiety. Physically, anxiety can cause insomnia, tightness of the chest and difficulty breathing. These drugs help to relieve those symptoms. Anxiety must also be treated as a thought disorder, which is why many psychotropic meds are accompanied by psychotherapy of some kind, to treat the whole person.

These are both benzodiazepines. They calm you down, especially for anxiety, but sometimes for agitation. They can make you feel like a zombie (they did to me), but in the medium term they are helpful. They can be addictive though.
