Practically and in my opinion, ecologists are people who care for the earth, if not, they wouldn't be here promoting the conservation of the earth's resources.

  3. baslicly they study ecosystems. the interaction between living things and the effect of man on them.

  4. Yes, it is a career. It is not the same thing as being an environmentalist; that's a state of mind, not a science.

Some ecologists teach. Some work for the various governments. Some work for industry, either directly or indirectly. For example, someone owns a tract of land and wants to build on it. It is necessary to show that the construction will have no (or minimal) adverse effect on the environment. This may require an inventory of wetlands, a stream survey (biological), a search for imperilled species of plants and animals ... any number of things. I have personally scuttled some projects with my findings, supported others, and (my favorite) gotten the developer to make minor changes to the plans to allow both development and protection of especially nice features of the habitat. I've done environmental impact studies in the U.S. and Trinidad, urban planning in Yemen,  benthic macroinvertebrate analysis in PA, wetland delineation in PA and NY, habitat evaluation in PA and NJ, and hunted for endangered species in those states too.
