  1. Basically push your body into a state of extreme stress (with caffeine, sugar, and other chemicals) that makes you feel more alert, and essentially activate the fight or flight response to give you that energy boost.


  2. They usually contain caffeine, which is a nervous sytem stimulator. (Coke and Pepsi also have some, but the enrgy drinks have more). Some have guarana, which is a natural plant extract also very high in caffeine.

    They also contain sugar, and some "sport" drinks might also contain electrolytes, which are minerals needed by the body for proper functioning of the nerves (and are lost in sweat).

  4. Most energy drinks contain high amounts of sugar and caffeine, much more than sodas and coffee. They also have taurine, ginseng, some B-vitamins, and guarana. All are forms of stimulant. Some work better in the brain, others in the nervious sytsem and other better in muscle.

    The sugar will make you crash after a while. The caffeine will normally intensify this becuase it dehydrates the body. If it is not replaced with water between 15 - 30 minutes after it is consumed then our body will also feel tired to keep from overworking and overheating due to a lack of water in our system.

    Guarana is a natural stimulant but is high in caffeine. The high caffeine content is the real reason why healthy energy drinks don't use it. Otherwise it is a good stimulant for us as it also reduces fatigue.

    Taurine is bad mouthed quite a bit because it is found in bile. But when you hear people say this just know that they are extremely ignorant and are proving how little they actually know. It is an amino acid that is in all other amino acids. It is in our heart, skeletal muscle, nervious system, and white blood cells too. In the bile it is essential for processing oils and fat soluable vitamins. There is no natural source for it outside of other animal tissue.

    Ginseng is also a great stimulant for lack of energy and help with the adrenal gland, which athletes love.

    A few B viatmins are normally added simply to offset what the caffeine will eliminate from the body. At least the regular ones are like this. The healthy energy drinks add many more B vitamins cause they are essential for energy too.

    Healthy energy drinks, as I said have many B vitamins and still use some caffeine and ginseng and taurine. They don't use sugar or guarana, again for the high caffeine content. The healthy energy drinks have about as much caffeine as a regular cup of coffee. Since you don't get the crash from the sugar and with reduced dehydrating effects from much less caffeine then the energy provided by them lasts much longer.
