  1. An engineer is a person who is professionally engaged in a field of engineering. We develop economical and safe solutions to practical problems, using tools like math and science while keeping technical constraints in mind.  In a certain context, we're professional inventors (among other things).  Our work essentially provides society with what it needs and what it wants, with the realization of the greatest desires being met with the largest rewards. Some would also call us scientific artists, which I think Da Vinci would agree with.  Famous engineers include the aforementioned Da Vinci, Edison, Bell, Tesla... and a multitude of others. The different things that engineers do are as varied as the people that do the tasks.  Common fields include the disciplines of chemistry, electrical, mechanical, civil, math, geology, aerospace, automotive... and so on and so on.  The money you make depends on where you work and what you're doing, but the average engineering entry level salary is usually above $50000 with the most successful veteran engineers making well into six figures and beyond.  Some people who began their professional careers as engineers have gone on to do other significant things in business, becoming CEOs and ridiculously rich in the process.

    Edit:

Here is a list of famous and infamous engineers to see the types of things people have done as engineers as well as outside of their professions.  Most of the infamous engineers are civil for some reason (see bin Laden).
