  2. FCS stands for Football Championship Series, while FBS stands for Football Bowl Series.  The NCAA renamed Division 1-A football as FBS since there are bowl games, and renamed Division 1-AA football as FCS since they have a playoff system to determine a national championship.  This is the first year that the NCAA is using this terminology.
