  1. First, a little language lesson. Chimps, humans, gorillas, bonobos, and orangatangs are all apes (it's like apples and oranges are both fruits).

    Since we're all apes, we have much in common, though we also differ.

    Other apes give us a window into what our ancestors were like, and how they lived. They're also another version of us in many ways. Apes are social critters, though how we manifest that has SOME differences, among the various species.

    Well, field studies of non-human primates can give insights into our own behavioral mechanisms, processes of learning, and gives us the ability to compare and contrast ourselves (which works best when taking as objective a standpoint as possible).
