  1. Geologists study rocks, volcanoes, topography, oceanology, historical fossils like the fossils of dinosours or trilobites, and the study anything related to Earth. The list of what geologist do goes on and on.

  2. study geos, earth

  3. study rocks and the earth

  4. When people think of what a geologist does, most folks think they're people who look for gas and oil, or gold and other precious commodities, or maybe the paleontologists who hunt for dinosaurs. While geologists indeed do all these things, there are many other things geologists do as well. Because the geology of the world is the physical framework in which everything else is set, geology and its study is intrinsic to understanding most of the natural environment, and even much of the political history, of the world.

Groundwater contamination is a major concern in any waste disposal decisions, and the study of groundwater and its behavior is an integral part of geology. [See our Hydrogeology pages.] Geologic bodies called soils produce most of the world's food, and support the forests of the Amazon basin and Maine alike. Geologists also identify areas potentially prone to flooding or coastal storm damage, help design foundations for large buildings and highways, and are at the forefront of research into global environmental change [Check out the Quaternary pages.] Geologists also are involved in law enforcement, as specific minerals from mud on shoes or car tires, for example, can show that a suspect in a crime may indeed have been at the scene where that crime was committed. A background in geology can also be an excellent base from which to go into environmental law or environmental management, as a number of Colby geology alumni have found.

Geologists also study volcanoes and earthquakes, to determine how and why they behave the way they do, how we might be able to predict future activity, and what they tell us about the composition and structure of the interior of the Earth. In fact, it was geophysicists studying earthquakes who made possible the global nuclear test ban treaty - because they learned how to tell underground nuclear tests from earthquakes, making verification of treaty violations possible!

  5. they study rocks and volcanoes, to put it simply.

  6. "A geologist is a contributor to the science of geology, studying the physical structure and processes of the Earth and planets of the solar system (see planetary geology)."
