What do golf course designers get paid?

Too much !! There have been a couple of renovations to our golf course and on one hole specifically there are 4 new fairway bunkers on a  par 5 which require a sand iron to get out. These are more than 300 yards from the green and no way in h**l can one play a wood from them. Yes , they do frame the driving area  but do penalize long hitters who should have a natural advantage on medium length par 5s. Bad design by an overpaid designer.

There is a wide range,  between landscape architects who also do that kind of work, mostly on low-profile muni's, and first-rate championship-calibre architects who are hired by exclusive clubs and corporations.

The pay can range from chump-change, basically, to big, big dough.
