Question:

What do government agencies for 911 dispatchers check?

I'm curious what standards are required of 911 dispatchers.

I know the military will not take anyone who has ever ever been on psychiatric meds. Is this the same for 911 operators? Like if you were on an anti-depressant for a short period of time?

What about physical requirements? If you are on blood pressure meds?

  1. You will definately have to undergo a psych eval.  They will also check your background history, and negative will effect you getting the job.  I know some places do a physical for insurance purposes

More than likely anti-depressants are fine, but if you were ever committed you probably wouldn't get the job.

  2. Psych evaluations are NOT done at every agency, but they are done at many.  If you have a medical condition that does not allow you to fulfill the responsibilities of the job then they don't have to hire you.  So being on meds may be fine as long as you can do the job.

Background investigations are done by all agencies.  Any felony prohibits you from getting the job.  Recent drug use will also prevent you from getting hired.

There isn't a physical agility test like there is for police officers, but there will be a general phhysical where they do a general exam and drug testing.
