What do i do about buying a car without the title?

if you buy a car from a private seller, but the seller dosnt have the title from the previous owner he/she bought it from, whats the easiest way to recieve the title or what do you do?

  1. Since cars are only sold by title, if the seller doesn't have one he can't sell the car.  So don't buy it.  

    Tell the seller you are interested, and will buy as soon as he is able to supply you with a clear title to it.  Unless and until he does, no money changes hands.  Period.

    Without a title you don't know if the car is stolen, or has a lien.

    Also, if the person that now has it didn't put it in his name, he didn't pay the sales tax due.  Do you want to pay both your tax and his?  Again, in case you missed it, don't buy it without a clear title in the name of the person selling the car.


  2. It varies from state to state.  If possible I'd go to the DMV with the person you're buying the car from and ask them what steps you need to take to get the title.

  6. well yo uhave to know whos car it really is first... and never buy one without.... if you do you could buy anyones car not a good thing if they didnt want to selling and you got it well you know what thats called right
