my boyfriend bought me two tortoises for valentines day. they live at his house because he has a good backyard and room for their cage. they are staying with me for a week and i put their cage outside, and let them roam during the day. when i went to let them out my little tortoise Sweet Pea was lodged between their log and the side of the cage panting and very wet with her eyes closed. I freaked out but i decided to take her inside and put her in the bathtub she seems to be calming down but shes very ansy. was it because she was lodged or overheated or what? what do i do?

  1. overheated is more likely, they can get out of most sticky situations, but heat is another matter, if she is going to be outside be sure that there is a cool dark place to hide, and a water dish large enough for her to get in. keep her inside for a while in a dark cool area and she should calm down, and be sure she has something to drink

  2. if she was wet it is more than likely sweet-pea wet herself when really stressed especially when stuck they will release, all the water they are holding on to it is a defense mechanism, if caught by a predator the tortoise will wee as it is quite a lot the thing holding them usually lets go (they wee a uric acid not urine), she was antsy because she was really stressed at being caught hold of as they can not look behind them she probably thought she was going to be eaten, just keep her calm for the rest of the day somewhere warm and shaded, but she was panicking because she could not free herself, just keep an eye on her she may not eat for a few days but if you keep her calm she would have recovered by tomorrow and have recovered from her panic,  best of luck honey hope sweet pea recovers from her shock

  3. More details would help- species, temperatures, sunlight exposure, etc.

If it is acting OK now, I would not worry about it. being trapped for a short time, unless it got over about 90F for a while, is no big deal for most species (not lots of fun, but not a big deal), and mild heat stress goes away pretty quickly as well.

Try http://ww.tortoisetrust.com for good care info on several species.

  4. both..they can get stressed out easily. Giver her some of her favorite foods and leave her alone for a few hrs so she can readjust,K.

    She's OK mom...   :  )
