today i was driving home from work and a dog jumps out in front of me. i didnt hit her, but she started running into head on traffic and i guided her toward a neighborhood. then took her with me. then when i get home (i had no idea what i was going to do with her) a neighbor comes up to me with a little miniture pincher and is like "hey, this is a loose dog" and i start playing with her and the other dog i had with me plays with her and liked her, so i took the little min pin with me too, thinking im going to be the hero of the day! so now i have these two dogs who ive taken in for the night since the humane society is closed, and ive started to get attached but i know i cant keep them. have any of you ever been in this situation? i feel like i did the wrong thing now but i am so glad i saved them. :/ help

  1. I've had a  very similar thing happen to me.  My husband and I were on our way home from somewhere, and when we turned onto our street, he almost ran over this tiny little puppy.

I got out of the car and picked her up.  She was limping and was wearing a flea collar and her breath smelled like she had just finished eating not long ago. She also looked kind of mangy, but not really bad.

husband gave her a bath, while I went around the neighborhood asking if anyone had lost a puppy.  No one seemed to want to claim her, so I fed her.  I had puppy food since I already had a 6 moth old puppy.

The next morning , I took her to the vet and got her shots and had her wormed.    I ended up keeping her because no one wanted to claim her and it appeared what whomever she belonged to before I found her, had not  done such a great job of taking care of her.

All I can tell you is to to follow your heart.  That is what I did and I never regretted taking her.  Do what you feel is in the best interests of the dogs.  If you can afford to take care of 2 new dogs in your home, then do so.

  2. you definately did the right thing! Not many people would even open their home for a night to two strays :]

Dont ever doubt this good deed.

  3. You did a good thing don't be upset if you get attached. When you take them to the shelter you can ask to adopt them is the owner is not found, then you can keep them if they dont find their family! I know if I lost my dog I would be so thankful for you picking him up

  4. you did the right thing by getting these dogs off the street where they could be hit by car or worse!

Tommarrow continue to do the right thing and start looking for the owners.. put a found ad in the paper, and call the shelter and police to see if any dogs have been reported missin.

  5. You took in 2 homeless dogs, that makes you good in my book. Have both of them scanned for a microchip and then take them to the humane society until someone claims or adopts them.

  6. yes you did the right thing. just contact the society or dog pound to give them a chance to have a loving family who will be able to take care of them. ive been there before.....i bet the dogs are glad you saved them too.

  7. You did the right thing!! You helped to lost doggies, and that is very awesome of you!! Try going around the neighborhood where you found them and knock on some doors to see if anyone knows who the dog might belong too, post it in the newspaper in the lost and found, or you can go onto craigslist.com and post that you found the dogs, you can put pictures of the dogs on there as well.

  8. I have so been in this position before...once with a black lab puppy and then again recently with a black lab mix.  Many years ago, a black lab puppy showed up on our doorstep.  We lived in an apartment that did not accept animals, so I called a friend who had a ranch and asked if she could foster for me while I looked for her owners.  We never found them and she ended up keeping her.  She ended up being a wonderful companion who later saved her life from a mugger.

Recently, we found a black lab mix on our road on the way home.  He was walking in front of our car and would not move.  When I went to check if he had tags I saw that he had been burned all down his back.  It was hard to decide what to do.  We tried to call animal control and they wouldn't take him that night.  He was in severe pain so we ended up taking him to the emergency vet.  It has cost alot in time, money, and energy nursing him back to health, but he is recovering and overcoming his hard life before us.  There were times that I did question what in the world I was thinking, but when I see how happy he is with us, I know we did the right thing.

I would send them to a humane society, especially if they seem healthy.  Many small town shelters euthanize quicker than the humane society would.  They will also scan for chips to see if they are in the registry.

You did them right by giving them a place for the night and who knows...you might become attached and decide to keep them.
