Heres the deal: Next month im getting a laptop. It is for highschool, and will be used during school and at home for work. (my school is issuing them to all students..its 'revolutionary'.) So anyways, at home, i only have a desktop with high speed internet and a modem. I am looking into getting a wireless router so i can work on my computer anywhere in my house. Can i just plug it into the modem i have and keep that same modem plugged into the desktop? Or will i need to buy a seperate modem for the wireless router? Basically, what i want to know is can i have ONE modem used for a desktop computer and a wireless router at the same time or will i need another modem for the wireless router? Best answer will be given! Also, is there a password to access the wireless internet in my home? are routers safe? thanks!

  1. What a total waste of taxpayers money!

A router is safe and secure as long as you password protect the admin page and you use WPA, not WEP encryption to keep moochers off your network. Also, it is best to turn off SSID.

  2. You don't need two Modems because your ISP is only sending you one IP address, connecting two modems would only s***w your connection, not to mention a waste of money.

What you need to do is get a Router ( you cant go wrong with a Net-gear). The common problem that people have connecting a router to a modem is what is called an ¨IP conflict¨... let me explain.

You can access your modem, as it is right now on your desktop by opening IE and typing on the address bar a number like 192.168.1.1 ¨your default gateway¨ (this number can change depending on the brand of the modem)

I work for a DSL provider so I do this 4 a living, and whats usually done is U change your default gateway on the modem from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.5.1, than connect the router and your all set, the router is on a bridge mode and should work like a plug n´play device

NOTE: If you get a Net-gear router there will be no need to do all this because its IP address is already different than your modem´s

    Net-gears IP: 192.168.0.1

If u do get a net gear to access it you will need this:

    user:admin

    password:password

NOW regardless of what brand of router you get it is very important that you place a security key, my advice would be WPA., its more secure than WEP and also look for an option to filter your MAC address´s, every device (PDA´s, PSP´s, Laptops, Desktops, etc.) have a MAC address that is unique, if you grant access only to the mac address from your laptop it will be next to impossible for some one to freeload off your wireless signal

    hope this helps

  4. Your router is meant to be connected to your Modem (via a WAN port). All you do is connect the Modem to the Router, and then do a wired connection from your Router to your Desktop. Your laptop can be wire-free and still access the internet.

Routers are safe, provided that you make yourself a password for your router (there are 2 possible flavors of passwords: WEP or WPA encryption. Most people use WPA 128 bit with TKIP/AES encryption.)

Also, check what kind of internet connection you have before you buy for your router. There are normal routers and ADSL routers.
