I applied for financial aid at my school, but they say that my parents put me as an dependent in there tax return and i did mine as independent. So now i am supposed to fix my taxes, but that will mean that i will have to return about $800. My parents won't change theres so should i change my taxes? Financial aid office does not even tell me how much money i am suppose to get. how about if they don't give anything i just lose my 800

  1. The financial aid office would not be in a position to advise you about your taxes other than to tell you that since your parents claimed you as a dependent, that is what you should have done on your tax return.  Filing an amended return is a simple matter, and you may not owe any additional taxes depending on your income.  You can get the amended form on line.  The FAO will be adding your parents' income into what is available to you for your education and will figure out your family expected contribution.  The paperwork has to be consistent, as you are either a dependent or you are not, and your parents' taxes say you are.
