  1. It took me about one to two weeks to get used to 'touching' my eye...and even still after a year or two of wearing contacts, the eye is sensitive to touch. Since it is a sensitive part of the body...you never really 'get used' to touching it. Contacts are foreign objects to the eye. Once they are put in properly...there isn't any problem. But getting them in can be tricky to learn. Wearing them for the first week or two feels awkward, too (like something in the eye). But once your eye gets used to them being there...you don't notice them. I wear AcueVue Oasys contacts...they are incredibly comfortable and do not dry out very often, even after 15+ hours of having them in. They are also so thin that I do not know that I have them in - they can't be felt most of the time.

Get a friend who has worn contacts and has experience, to assist you and give you pointers as to how to properly get them in. Also...even better, as the above user posted, go back to the place where you got the contacts and get assistance with putting them in there. As for me...I learned for myself. That's honestly the only way to learn is trial and error, for the most part. Not every 'method' that each person uses, is preferable for another person who may find it uncomfortable.

Keep trying. I wondered how I would ever get mine in, at first. Sometimes it took me 20 or 30 minutes or so to get both in, during the first couple of weeks. This is normal. Also...once you get the contact lined up with your eye...don't try to 'fit' it in literally on top of your pupil. The pupil is incredibly sensitive and you'll just flip the contact somewhere due to the eyes' strong reaction to something touching the pupil.  What I do is get the contact lined up in front of my eye...and then look off to the side, pushing my finger slowly towards my eye and keeping it lined up. It goes onto the 'side' of my eye (the white part, instead of right on top of the pupil) and then I basically roll my eye around and it snaps itself on top of my cornea. This is the best way that I have found to put them in.

Believe me, there is an incredible worth to getting used to contacts. Once I tried them...I never wanted to go back to my glasses. The 100% field of view that you get (as opposed to glasses where if you look above/below/outside of the lenses, it gets blurry) is more than worth it.

  2. Go back to the doctor's office where you got them and have them go over it with you again. Practice will make you calm down so that your eye does not mind it anymore. We have lots of people like this that comein for more guidence so that they can do it easier. Surgery is not for everyone and does not offer a perfect solution for all problems. I suggest you call your dor. office and get some more training and once you car more adept at it it will be as easy as brushing your teeth.
