  1. He probably has a cataract or eye injury. WHY is he outside? he is an inside pet! Find a good home for him!

  2. Your Guinea Pig has a cataract on her eye. Since it  happened very quickly it is most likely due to diabetes, which is common in some Guinea Pigs or inherited. Either way it is a cataract, nothing to worry about really, I had a Guinea Pig with diabetes so she had chronic cataracts.

As it is due to either being inherited or diabetes, signs of diabetes are drinking lots of water, thin but is eating normally and healthy appetite, frequently going pee,  sudden onset of cataracts, chronic wet bottom, and frequent Urinary Tract Infections (URI). Are all signs of diabetes, it is treatable but it takes work on your part and an exotic vet that will work with you.

Best way to lessen the cataract is by feeding her fresh foods with lots vitamin C and A in them. Also seeing your vet is a good idea as the vet can prescribe a cream that you can put on the eye to help. If it is inherited your best chance of helping the cataract is with the food as sometimes the eye cream can be expensive and often not work at all and even if it is diabetes.

You'll have to take her to an exotic vet to have her looked at, but as it happened just over night, I would say it is diabetes, just as that is what happened with my girl. She lived a long healthy life considering she was already 5 years old when I got her. So diabetes is nothing to fear, you just need a vet who is experienced and will work with you in caring for your Guinea Pig.

  3. i agree with the other answers and people. It might be a cataract. You can't make it go away. You could prevent more damage by bringing it to a vet.

If your scared for his health make sure you give it the attention it needs. Make sure he has enough pellets that are ONLY guinea pig pellets. Make sure he has hay everyday and MAKE SURE he gets ALOT of vitamin c!. Since he is outside he is more vulnerable to diseases.

Don't feel bad if you have an outside cage for him even though people try to convince you other wise. A cage inside and outside doesn't matter as long as its suitable. Make sure he has extra bedding since he is outside and make sure you check up on him more often.

  4. you should NOT keep a guinea pig out side, my uncle used to have 2 guini pigs he left outside, one morning he went out to check on them, the cage had been torn open and knocked to the ground and 2 days later he found the 1 of the mangled bodies under his porch, my point is that if a predator wants to bad enough it WILL find a way into the cage  no matter how safe it seems.

  5. Duff,  I must agree altogether with ROXY, so I am just writing to also voice my concern tho as to why (name) Guinea Pig is living outdoors!   I know they seem kinda less cuddly and some species can be quite boistrous -- yet they prone2 catch cold outdoors..

B t w , there is a really large and awesome breed from Western Cape - to be honest I cant be real sure that 100% Guinea pig,  an the little 'uns (I had bought this one pregnant) would follow her literally everywhere!! like ..  :)

ANywaYs ,  bring her in and food full of Vita  C !  Get a good book on G/Pigs    or   Download from the  ASPCA . k?
