The bad thing is that the stable is made of wood. And when he scratches his bum on the wall, the wall moves loads, and we are on a livery yard, so the stable isnt ours. What should I do? Please dont say anything like: scratch his bum for him, because we cant.

  1. evryone is right, you should first check for worms. If this is not the problem then it may just be that your horse gets sweaty and then his bum gets itchy. We have this problem alot because I live in a very humid place. What works for us is to shampoo the tail very well then let dry and get some Listerine(yes the mouthwash) we use the original kind and rub an ample amount into the doc of his tail and leave it on.No need to rinse.Works wonders!!

    Hopes this helps

  2. Build a stable made out of concrete then.

  3. He would have sweet itch, is i his bum or his dock or tail?

If he is rubbing his tail it is sweet itch and you will need some ointment and a good sweet itch rug, if not, he could have flees or lice or worms so check and treat for those too.

  4. My horse used to do that and it turned out he had worms, you should worm him orget your vet to check it out if the problem continues.

  5. I say it's sweet itch.  Do you have a lot of gnats at your barn?  If it's not sweet itch nor worms, then it's probably dry skin.  Put a cup of vegetable oil in his feed (check with your vet first).

  6. some horses just like their butt scratched. my horse jet loves it. its his favorite thing in the world

  7. It could be a number of things:

Worms would be the first thing that comes to mind; usually it is the tail head that is being itched.  Other things could be irritation under the tail or between the hind legs, dry skin/dermatitis, insects (lice, mites, etc) or dirty sheath.

    good luck

  8. your horse has worms i should say buy a worming gun or worming powder and it should stop

  9. Most likely a type of threadworm (pin worm) that infects animals as well as humans.  Get the vet to check the horse.

  10. my grandads horse, willow, does this and she hasnt got worms, she just enjoys a good scratch. she doesnt really have anywhere strong enough in the field to scratch her bum on so she does it when she is in the stable.

does your horse live out 24/7 in the field, because willow does, but in the winter she is fine because she come in every night, meaning she can scratch when ever she wants.

i wouldnt worry about it too mch but i would try worming and if that doesnt help get the vet out.

  11. I am going to assume you worm your horse.  Another thing is keeping his sheath clean.  Sometimes horses bums get dirty under the doc of the tail, make sure that is clean.  If you do all this then try putting some conditioner/moistrizure on the doc of his tail, one that is used for leaving on and doesn't have to be rinsed out.  If the stall walls have horse p**p on them and he gets it on his behind quarters that will irritate him, make sure the stall walls are free of horse p**p.

  12. if it is not a habbit,get a vet.

  13. give him a worm dose. He probably has what you call seat worms. that is a tell tale sign for these types of worms.

  14. Sometimes it is a sign that the horse has worms.

  15. Has he been wormed regularly, that often a sing of worms. Or it could be dry skin causing th itchiness.

  16. Boredom...needs more excercise.  and if that isn't enough, put yourself in his shoes  (so to speak).  He may need a little more than you think.

  17. HI
