What do i do recover my rental car from "unauthorized driver"?

I rented a car and let someone else, supposedly a friend drive the car. (which I shouldn't have done) But they will not return the car to me. If i call the claim service and they recover the car how expensive can it get? If you have experienced it please share. I messed up thinking I could trust a friend, yes i have truly learned a lesson. And what would I have to go through if they don't find it. How can I avoid having to pay a car note to a car that I rented? What should I tell them? I need answers ASAP. This is very disheartening.

Just report it stolen.

Tell the cops exactly what happened (don't lie).  People not return the car is considered stealing.
